“You must learn day by day, year by year, to broaden your horizon. The more things you love, the more you are interested in, the more you enjoy, the more you are indignant about, the more you have left when anything happens.”
The Office of Multicultural Student Development sends out a weekly newsletter to its mailing list with current events and programs.
Every semester, lectures and programs on various topics concerning diversity and multicutural topics are offered on campus. These lectures are free to attend and anyone is welcome. The Lunch and Learn diversity series is an interactive brown bag lunch style of program, hosted in the Multicultural Center around noon. The Diversity Lecture Series brings speakers to campus every few weeks that speak about a host of topics. The schedule and videos of these lectures can be viewed by clicking on the left hand menu.
The Kwanzaa Celebration and Find Yosef a Holiday help App State students to interact with various winter holidays from around the world.
Larger events such as the Diversity Celebration,an annual multicultural festival, allow a larger body of students to learn about diversity through programs, interactive workshops, and artistic productions. The Diversity Celebration at Appalachian State University features performing arts, craft workshops, educational exhibits and ethnic foods by local and regional presenters and artisans. This free event seeks to provide participants with a safe environment for learning about others, while encouraging deeper exploration of differences. The annual Diversity Celebration enhances Appalachian State University’s mission of “accepting the responsibility to be actively involved in addressing the educational, economic, cultural, and societal needs of the changing region, state, nation, and world,” by providing a venue where diverse perspectives, cultures and values are accepted, appreciated and celebrated.
